  • macOS 11 Big Sur or later (Apple Silicon)
  • 4GB RAM minimum
  • Internet connection
  • OpenAI API key

Apple Gatekeeper Notice

If you see a warning that the app is from an unidentified developer, try the following methods (you only need to do this the first time):

Option 1: Right-Click and Open

  1. Right-click (or Control-click) on the DMG or app icon.
  2. Select: Choose Open from the context menu.
  3. Confirm: In the dialog that appears, click Open again to confirm.

This method bypasses the quarantine warning without requiring any Terminal commands.

Option 2: Manual Removal Using Terminal

  1. Open the Terminal application.
  2. Type the following command (replace /Applications/AIBookWriter.app with the actual path if different):
    xattr -rd com.apple.quarantine /Applications/AIBookWriter.app

  3. Press Enter.

This command removes the quarantine attribute from the app, allowing it to open normally. This method is less ideal for everyday users because it requires using the Terminal.

Troubleshooting: App Not Starting on macOS

If the app still does not start after installation, it might be due to the app being marked with a quarantine flag when downloaded. Use one of the above methods (Right-Click and Open or Manual Removal Using Terminal) to bypass or remove the quarantine flag. Once done, the app should launch normally.

Troubleshooting

Common Issues

API Connection Problems

  1. Check Your Internet Connection

    • Ensure you have a stable and active internet connection.
    • If you’re using a proxy or VPN, try disabling it temporarily to see if it’s causing the issue.
  2. Verify the Validity of Your API Key

    • Double-check for typos or extra spaces in your API key.
    • Ensure the key is correctly copied into your application or environment variable.
  3. Ensure You Have Sufficient API Credits

    • Log in to your OpenAI account and check your account usage and billing status.
    • Top up your account balance or switch to a paid plan if you have exhausted your free trial credits.
  4. Check the API Status Pages

    • Visit status.openai.com to see if there are any ongoing outages or incidents.
    • If there is a reported partial or major outage, you may need to wait until service is restored.

Generation Errors

  1. Restart the Generation Process

    • Sometimes simply retrying the request or restarting your application can resolve transient errors.
  2. Clear Temporary Files

    • If you’re working with local cache or temp files, clearing them may help if they have become corrupted.
  3. Check Available Disk Space

    • Insufficient disk space can cause generation processes to fail.
    • Ensure you have enough storage to handle any intermediate or output files.
  4. Reduce Content Length

    • If you’re hitting token or length limits, try breaking your request into smaller chunks.
    • Check OpenAI’s token limits for the specific model you’re using.

401/403/404

  • Lack of Model or Feature Access

    • A 403 error can indicate you do not have access to a specific model or feature.
    • Verify that your subscription tier or account type grants access to the model you’re calling (e.g., GPT-4).
    • Check if you need to join a waitlist or enable a Beta feature.
  • API Key Permissions

    • Confirm that your API key has the correct permissions.
    • If you have created multiple organization accounts, ensure you’re using the key from the correct organization.
  • Exhausted Credits or Billing Issues

    • If your balance is depleted, the API may return a 403.
    • Deposit more credits or fix any billing-related issues in the OpenAI billing section.
  • Try Regenerating Your API Key

    • Revoke the old key and generate a new one.
    • Update your application or environment variables with the new key.

Export Issues

  • Close the document in other applications
  • Check write permissions
  • Ensure sufficient space
  • Try an alternative location
